T4 fan replacement
T4 fan replacement
Had my T4 suddenly stopping several times and when I investigated I found the fan had died (obviously shutdown was a thermal overload safety - nice that it worked).
Since then have tried replacing my fan and thought I would share some learnings
Fan is a 12v 50mm unit with a 2 pin connector to the motherboard under the hard drive.
Have sourced a number of replacements from ebay/ali express etc and so far, while they work (ie system boots and runs happily) there is a low wife acceptance factor due to increased noise.
My learning from this is that ideally you need a low RPM fan (probably about 3000-3500) with a noise rating of <20dB.
The ones I have tried typically are running at about 4500 rpm and have a noise rating of 24-30dB.
The quietest one is usable but still looking for a quieter fan to get back to original noise levels. If I find one I will post.
Don't suppose anyone out there has found a good replacement fan?

Re: T4 fan replacement
In the ‘U4 high pitch noise during operation’ topic, from this post onwards, ‘BigBen’ was trying to source a quiet fan for a U4. Keep in mind the noise 'BigBen' was trying to reduce would probably be different to what you are hearing from your T4, so some of the suggestions in that topic wouldn't apply.
I suspect the T4 & U4 fans are different, but you may get some ideas from what fans ‘BigBen’ tried (brands, speed vs noise, etc). I don’t know if the ‘NB-BlackSilentFan XS-1’ fan that ‘BigBen’ had on order was successful or not.
In that same topic ‘MrQuade’ gave a link to another topic T4 HDD Replacement that covers some info about the T4 fan. I don’t know if that will help.

Re: T4 fan replacement
Interestingly, you can now buy a replacement fan for the T4 & U4 for $13.95 + delivery.

Re: T4 fan replacement
A quick vent.... (which seems kind of appropriate since the topic here is fans)
I recently purchased a replacement fan for my U4, and it arrived today.
The connector that comes with the fan does not fit the socket on the U4's circuit board. Pretty disappointing.
So I unclipped the wires from the connector, assuming I could slot them into the connector of the old fan. Nope. Too big to fit.
So I had to cut the cables on the old & new fans and do some soldering.
Kind of a minor gripe, but really, why would they sell something is not a like-for-like replacement?
What should have been a 3 minute task turned into an hour.
20 days for the fan to get to me in Perth was pretty frustrating too. Thankfully I had a T4 in the bedroom that I could use in the interim.

Re: T4 fan replacement
I recently replaced the fan in my U4 with the one from the BW shop.
It came with instructions that it may be necessary to remove the plastic socket from the MB. It's not glued, but is a very tight fit.
After removing that socket the connector on the fan went straight on to the pins on the MB.

Re: T4 fan replacement
I got a refund for fan as it's not suitable for the T4, The mount holes in the fan are too big in diameter for the screws to grab and secure the fan. Bigger screws would not fit through the T4 back panel. I received the following response from Beyonwiz "Ah ok, I forgot that the T4 fan was mounted on the rear."
I note they haven't removed T4 from description.

Re: T4 fan replacement
You might want to consider contacting Warkus for a refurb on your T4 before you end up with a DOA unit like mine. The excess heat from the poor heatsink/paste installation has caused the SOC on mine to basically self destruct and there is no repair remedy available for the unit once that happens. So some early refurbishment on the T4s that are out there and working might be warranted.Trial_Master wrote: ↑Tue Nov 10, 2020 16:04I got a refund for fan as it's not suitable for the T4, The mount holes in the fan are too big in diameter for the screws to grab and secure the fan. Just putting that out there cause I'm bummed that mine can't be fixed and I can't source a replacement for it.

Re: T4 fan replacement
If you can believe the limited specs posted, I think the load current should be fine. The mounting hole spacing is obviously also critical.
A couple of recently purchased different labelled fans have turned out to be nothing like what was advertised by the seller. The Gelid Solutions Silent 5, 50mm Quiet Case recommended by Half Round being the exception (discussion on that fan beginning here).
The bearings being what gets noisy after a while, the NBR bearing used in the Nidec fan in your last link sounds interesting. I would like to pull one of those apart to see what the bearings look like.
I can’t find that fan on Nidec’s website to get more information.
