How to install iView and SBSNow (and some other catch-up services)

Post by MrQuade » Sat Jun 15, 2019 15:51

Kodi is a cross-platform media player software application that can run its own wide range of plugins.

The V2's ability to run Kodi as a plugin allows the lucky V2 owner to run Kodi plugins within the V2's Kodi plugin! Plugin Inception!

The good news here is that there are plugins available for accessing a variety of streaming services, including Australian streaming content.

One particular set of Kodi plugins found at Aussieaddons can be installed to allow you to access a range of services, including:
  • ABC iView;
  • SBS On Demand;
  • 9 Now;
  • AFL Video;
  • NRL Live; and
  • Netball Live
Unfortunately, the other FTA catchup services protect their streams with DRM, and have not allowed third party services to access their streams.
(Note that as of the time of writing this, the 9 Now plugin will not function due to DRM. The version of Kodi required to deal with this is v18+ and the V2 currently run v17.6)

The Aussieaddons page claims that they no longer make their plugins available due to legal complications, however, they still offer their plugin repo and allow you to access the services listed above.

The first thing you will need to to is install the Kodi plugin on the V2.
This is done in the usual fashion via the "download plugins" option in the main menu:
MENU->Setup->Plugins->Download plugin

The Kodi plugin can be found under "extensions".

You need to restart the V2, for Kodi to appear in the Main Menu in the leftmost plugins column.
Kodi can also be access with the BLUE button from Live TV.

The next thing to do is to download the Aussieaddons repo (repository). This is a zip file that can be installed under Kodi, that tells Kodi where to find the Aussieaddons plugins.

Go to the Aussieaddons download page and grab the zip file.

Copy the zip file ti a location that the V2 can access. You can put it on a USB stick, or copy it to the V2's "movie" shared directory over the network.

Once Kodi is installed, and the Aussieaddons repo zip file is copied to the V2, the repo can be installed. The Aussieaddons download page includes instructions and a video on how to do that.

The video shows how to install the repo from the 0:50s mark. Prior to this is shows how to install the plugin directly via the Internet.

The next step is to install the streaming services plugins themselves.
The video will explain this process from the 1:30 point.

To access the sports streams, a further plugin is required. "Inputstreamadaptive".
This plugin can be downloaded from here, and can be installed in the same manner as the "Aussieaddons" zip file.

Hi MrQuade,

The website to which you link says:
Add-ons have now been removed
It's with our greatest displeasure to announce that Aussie Add-ons will no longer be operating.

After being contacted by some content providers about copyright violations, we believe it's best that we stop supporting all of our add-ons.

Our aim was to support those users wanting to use free and Open Source software to enjoy Australian free-to-air content on their Kodi installations, which I think we managed to do.

Unfortunately it seems we have crossed a line, and therefore we must comply and remove all of our add-ons and code.

It's been a pleasure working on this project, and thanks to our users who have all been great.
Do you have an archive copy of all the previous add-ons?

Regards,
Ian.

No, and its likely they would not work with the DRM anyway unfortunately.

They worked just fine. They also had the added feature of not allowing the ads to be inserted into the stream. That is why the authors were forced to remove them. :(

Finding copies of the addons is like finding gold.

On what version of Kodi though? The 9Now one wont work on the 17.6 Kodi that the V2 runs. There is a note about the DRM defeating features only being available on v18+

Hi MrQuade,

I had been running the addons for quite a while. I don't remember the version of Kodi I first started using them. I think it was about version 15 or 16. Unfortunately that Raspberry Pi has died and taken the addons with it. I have been unable to find an archive copy.

Regards,
Ian.

If the plugins were Open Source, then making the source code available should be fine. Single click, ready-to-run binaries in an install feed less so.

Hello PeterU,

From memory they were open sourced until all the threats came along.

I'd suggest that you git clone as fast as you can. Figure out how to use the source later...

Does this mean we can't use the V2 for Netflix, iView, and SBS On Demand?
Sort of removes half the features I bought it for.....
DP-P1 and other stuff...and now a V2

You can use it for iView and SBS On Demand, as-per my initial post.
Those are plugins for the Kodi software that the V2 supports.
The iView and SBS plugins are pretty basic, and they won't look like any app-based plugin (such as you would see on a phone or on a smart TV for example).

Netflix or any of the big-name paid streaming services were not planned to be supported and my take on it is they will be *highly* unlikely to ever be supported on an open-source set top box such as the V2.

In addition to iView and SBS, I was wondering if anyone had tried and/or managed to install for example BBC iPlayer on Kodi (for use via VPN or a smart DNS)? Or might they have DRM issues as well? Just curious ...

I've only just received my V2 so not had a chance yet to do anything more than a basic setup, without internet at all, but eventually it would be nice to be able to access a broader range of services.

I haven't tested that (no VPN services), but I would say it *should* work as long as you enable your VPN. The BBC iView plugin is a part of the standard Kodi plugin set, and was working on 17.x versions.

It seems that if Kodi 18 comes to Beyonwiz, then all the good services will follow. Netflix already works with Kodi 18. The key seems to be that Kodi 18 has DRM capability which is necessary. I can't see that there is any reason not to allow Netflix to run on Open Source hardware. All the players work on Chrome on a PC.

The ABC iView plugin has stopped working for me. It complains it requires the inputstream.adaptive plugin, which as I understand is not available for Kodi 17.6?

I take it this means ABC has now put DRM on iView, and broken the plugin? Or have I missed something?

Sounds like it.

When I am back at home I will update my openatv V2 and see if I can get it going there. Openatv firmware has v19 Kodi.
