V2 Recording (Manual Pg28 4.10 Recording

Post by ciscus » Wed Dec 23, 2020 14:30

Oh how I long for the simplicity of previous Beyonwiz models. Or I am stupid. Probably the latter.

I have looked at the V2 Manual as above, and alas no luck.

Here is the problem - The V2 has been left running for some time on say on SBS HD.
I see on the TV the program running and think "that looks interesting, I think I'll record it and watch the whole program from the beginning."
I follow the instructions on page 28. No deal. I try various options but cannot get it to work. I try different settings, I curse and I then revert to watching it on SBS on Demand.

So can one of you Wizzes please help me out on this.

Thanks and Merry Christmas, Ciscus

By the way, I guess there is no way of recording from ABC iView or SBS on Demand

Is Menu >> Setup >> TV >> Timeshift settings enabled?

If it is just press the red record button and select the event to be saved.

PS Do not change channels until the recording is activated. After that, you can.

PM me if you would like Windows programs (using the command line) to download from all the Aus catch up services.

That indicates that what Paul_oz53 suggested will work.

If you tell it to record the timeshift buffer and then change channels,
  • When you change channels, the current timeshift buffer is saved to the recordings directory, and a recording from the channel you were timeshifting from is started.
  • When that recording ends, the timeshift buffer (program before you changed channel) and the recording (started when you changed channels) are joined. It can take a few minutes for that to all happen, but the joinig doesn't start until the recording finishes.
  • There might be a short glitch in the recording at the join point.
The division of the timeshift buffer into programs (the start time for the saved timeshift) is determined from when the broadcaster changes the "currently showing" program info, and the recording length after the "changed channel" recording is determined from the EPG. Neither of these are completely reliable about when the program actually starts or ends.

I'm pleasantly surprised that the manual is actually correct (it includes changes I made during the "Great Rearrangement" of the live TV REC button menu). :D

Hi Ciscus,

If you are watching a live TV show what happens if you press the left arrow once?

Does a green timeline appear at the top left of the screen?

If yes, if you press Previous it should go back to the start of the current program or to the immediate previous program if you've been on the channel for a while. And, pressing the record button should activate the save menu noted above.

If none of this is working we need to establish whether the timeshift location is working. Menu >> Sources files >> V2 Internal HDD. Select the timeshift folder and see if files are present. They should be named pts_livebuffer_1, etc.

Edit: "Internal HDD" is not applicable to a V2. The V2 location will typically be a Back USB slot, a NAS or an SD card. Check each of these for the existence of a timeshift folder containing files if more than one location is possible on your machine.

Ok, thanks for the replies.

When I press the RECORD button the following screen appears:

Please set recording end time or duration

Date Wed 23 Dec 2020
Time 17:34
Duration 0:15

LEFT/RIGHT change the date

RED Cancel Green OK

Not the screens shown in the manual:

a) A recording is currently running and
b) Which event do you want to save?

I am still in the dark.

The appearance of the timeshift progress bar depends on the skin in use. In the pre-loaded skins (easy-skin-aus-hd & FullMetalWizard), it's blue. It's green in IanSav's OverlayHD skin.

When I press the RECORD button the following screen appears:

That is because you chose the "Create instant recording" option.
Instead, choose the "Select an event to save..." option.

Maybe the recording button is set in Menu >> Setup >>System >> Button settings to Instant record and is bypassing the default Instant recording menu.

Either way, what does left arrow do?

Ok, thanks for the replies.

When I press the RECORD button the following screen appears:

What the REC and long-REC buttons do in this context is user-selectable. The manual shows what hallens in the system default setting.

The settings are "Action on short REC" and "Action on long REC" in MENU>Setup>System>Button settings. Their default settings are both "Instant recording menu...". The manual shows the action with that default setting.

It looks like you have "Action on short REC" set to "Create instant recording...".

In this context RED will always show the "Instant recording menu..." popup.

I'd just like to clarify the V2 doesn't have an internal HDD.

Oops! A danger of not having a V2 to check before posting.

Regardless, we would still want to know what the timeshift folder contains if it is still a problem.

I didn't know what the V2 devices show up as either, so I took a look at Harddisk.py and if I understood it correctly, the slot names will be -
"Back USB3 Slot", "Back USB2 Slot", "Back SD Slot". Making the File Commander entries "{disk label} ({slot})"

This is what the three storage slots in the V2 look like in the File Commander:
Screen Shot 2020-12-24 at 10.10.06.png
Screen Shot 2020-12-24 at 10.10.06.png (110.92 KiB) Viewed 2211 times

And in the YELLOW Location popup in the media selection screen:
Screen Shot 2020-12-24 at 10.11.15.png

The first part of the storage slot entry is the disk label (if there is one), for example the "V2" in "V2 (Back USB3 Slot)".

Hello All.

Problem solved.

I went to System > Button Settings > then I

Enable remote control short POWER button (this was already on)

Then I went to:

Action on short REC changed to select an event to save
Action on long REC changed to select an event to save

And it all worked.

Thanks to all for your advice and Merry Christmas Regards Ciscus
