Remote control problem

Post by Andy55 » Mon Oct 18, 2021 19:17

Hi.
I have a failing remote control for a U4 unit. Aware I can purchase a replacement but I have an unused remote for a T4 I would like to repurpose.
(No response to query with Beyonwiz Support Desk)
The current code is 0xAE97. I can still navigate with the dodgy remote (it is the commonly used buttons becoming intermittent)
I see four options:
U4/T4/T2 0xO2F3
T2/T4 0xO2F2
0xO2F4
T3 0xABCD
The top option seems most promising but I fear that if I try the wrong code I will be unable to reverse the action and be stuck with an unusable box?
There are no navigation keys on the box itself so I would be locked out?
Sorry if this has been addressed elsewhere but a search produces multiple threads many of which I do not understand - too technical.
Thanks in anticipation.

The T2/T4 0x02F2 option is the one you want. The T2 and T4 remotes send the 0x02F2 code by default.

Thanks for the quick response Peter.
Success!
Reassured by you I gave it a try - discovered a fail-safe dialogue box to check function and a default return to original if no response.
No need to worry. Some smart people out there!
Thanks again.

The thing to watch out for is when you reflash the firmware you need a U4 remote briefly to complete the setup and restore the backup.

Don't lose the old one!

Wow. Thanks for the heads-up. Could have been awkward. Great forum.

Is it only certain buttons on the U4 remote that don’t work reliably? If so, & if you like repairing things, the buttons can be repaired with suitable buttons from P1Repair. Selecting suitable sized buttons from the ButtonWorx Universal Individual Button Repair - Mix & Match could be the way to go.

Some forum members have used the repair kit for the Harmony 650 remote with success, but because there isn’t a kit available for the Beyonwiz remotes you would need to select suitable sized individual buttons.

Postage from the USA is slow but dispatch once the order is received is prompt. You would need to do the sums to see if it is cost effective.

Good information.
Thanks to Peter's advice I have a functioning alternative but still require the original as advised by Paul.
It's only a few frequently used buttons that are flakey - maybe just dirty contacts?
Now that it is not in use I'll dismantle it and have a go at trouble shooting - hope I won't need USA parts but good to know - thanks

I have been following this and thought, hang on, surely you could just change the remote code using open webif, went in and yes you could. But thought for 10 seconds more and went, ah no, after a usb flash, network is not configured. Without remote, no way to restore, so no network, bugger. If the network came up auto dhcp after a usb flash would that make remote control possible?

Just a thought.

An alternative is to get a V2 remote. This uses the same code set as a U4 remote, and is, IMO, a better remote than both the the U4 original and the T4 "shoebox" remote.

The T4 remote lacks the TV-OUT and the HDMI-IN buttons on the U4 remote, and the V2 remote lacks the HDMI-IN button (because the V2 doesn't have HDMI-IN).

For a quick temporary fix, this topic has some good info. There are others topics with photos covering dismantling the remote & cleaning it, but my search skills have failed me today.

But in all the remotes I’ve repaired this way I’ve found it either hasn't been that successful or the repair hasn't lasted that long.

A few tips that may help:

Only use isopropyl alcohol (greater than 90% – I use ‘Diggers’ brand) on the circuit board (definitely not on the rubber keypad membrane). This won’t leave any residue whereas most other cleaning products will.

Very gently wash the rubber membrane in warm water & a very small amount of dishwashing detergent, then rinse it & let it dry thoroughly before re-assembly.

Make sure the contacts that make contact with the batteries are also clean. Clean these & both ends of the batteries before fitting with isopropyl alcohol. Don’t touch the contact ends of the batteries with your fingers so as to prevent oils from your fingers contaminating the contact surfaces which will increase the contact resistance.

You were right the first time.
I believed that there's enough of a network established after the USB firmware upgrade to let an ethernet-connected Wiz be controlled by OWIF (i.e. to reply to the restore settings prompt).
I thought that I'd used that in the past. I decided to see if my memory was correct.

Nice to know there is Openwebif as a fallback option. Like Altimes, I believed after a USB flash, the network is not configured.

Accident of history but my T3 uses U4 codes whilst the U4 is set to the T3 default codeset. That was to save me reprogramming the Logitech. One of these days I'll revert the T3 and U4 to their native codes but I really hate the Logitech software...

Wired Ethernet will default to DHCP and should be up on first boot.
