BUG: T3 Forgets PiP when EPG opened and others

Post by MrQuade » Sun Dec 07, 2014 15:23

First:
Normally when PiP is active, you have available, a number of options to perform actions to do with PiP (zap focus, options etc...).

If you activate PiP, and then open the EGP, Single EPG, or Multi EPG, when you return to live TV, the PiP options are not available. All you are presented with instead is an option to activate PiP again (even though PiP is still running.

If you then "reactivate" PiP (even though it is already active), all the PiP options return.

This bug does not seem to be triggered if you open the info screens, infobar, or channel list, only the EPGs.

I had thought at first that it had something to do with the EPG and MultiEPG requiring their own PiP inset, but the Single EPG doesn't use an inset video, and it still triggers the bug.

Second:
If you activate PiP and then open an EPG style with an inset video, you end up with the normal video inset, but with a big black rectangle over the top where the regular PiP should have been.

Third:
The T3 is incapable of displaying HD PiP, and I acknowledge that this is a hardware limitation. You cannot activate PiP when viewing live HD TV, and the picture is corrupted if you try to change the PiP inset to an HD channel.
If you happen to have activated PiP on an SD service and then change channel to an HD service, the SD inset continues to work properly however, so the inability to activate PiP in HD is just because the T3 cannot open an HD inset. If the T3 instead displayed the blank inset, the user would still have the opportunity to zap focus to the inset and change to an SD service.

I think a few things could possibly be done with this.
Firstly, the state of PiP needs to be "remembered" when the EPG is opened, and then closed. Alternatively, when the EPG is opened, PiP needs to be properly turned off so that it must be re-activated properly by the user (not left with an active PiP and no controls).

Secondly, when the EPGs need to activate an inset, PiP should be disabled so that the inset video does not have a black rectangle over it. As before, ideally, when the EPG is closed again, the PiP is reactivated properly, or less-ideally, it is deactivated properly.

Thirdly, if a user has activated PiP, and changes channel such that the main view is showing an HD service, the PiP inset should blank out and maybe display a short message saying "Not available in HD". Similarly, if the user changes the inset channel to an HD service, the inset should be blanked out with the same message. I don't think it would be appropriate to have the T3 automatically skip over the HD channels when PiP is active.
