Past Image Discussion beyonwiz-4.4-beyonwizt3-20150417

Post by Wiz HQ » Mon Apr 27, 2015 11:50

**Major Update. Must be Updated via USB . Please read important information below before proceeding with the Update**

Pre-Update Checklist

Check 1
“VERY IMPORTANT”
THE T3 MUST HAVE THE LATEST BOOTLOADER INSTALLED BEFORE INSTALLING THIS UPGRADE OR IT WILL FAIL.

Latest Bootloader version required: Thur Mar 12 23:37:35 AEDT 2015

How to check if I have the correct Bootloader:
Press the Menu button on your T3 remote and scroll to the Far right and select Information and press OK, now Select About and press OK. The Bootloader version is listed half way down the screen, if the bootloader date is anything before the version listed above you “MUST” update it before proceeding with the new software, go to next step (b) (Upgrading the Bootloader). If you have the version listed above you can proceed to Check 2.
Upgrading the Bootloader:
Please go to the following page to download and follow the instructions on upgrading your Bootloader to the latest version viewtopic.php?f=45&t=8941 . Once you have upgraded the Bootloader please go back into the menu as described in point (a) above and check that the bootloader version in now correct. Before proceeding with the next step please make sure that you delete the Bootloader files off the USB stick before applying the new firmware files.

Check 2
Upgrading via USB will reset your T3 to factory setting once complete. You can backup your settings including Timers, Favourites and Network Configuration, before you attempt the upgrade. Press the Menu button on your T3 remote and scroll across to Setup and press ‘OK’, then scroll down to Software Manager and press ‘OK’ then scroll to Create Backup and press ‘OK’. When you get the message Execution finished! Press ‘OK’ and you should get a popup stating Backup Done. After you load the new firmware you will get an option to Restore from Backup, selecting this will restore your settings.

DOWNLOAD
Download here and follow directions below: http://feeds.beyonwiz.org/beyonwiz-4.4- ... 17_usb.zip

Tips
* If you can't get the update to start try a different USB stick, your USB stick should be 1.1 compatible so older USB2 sticks seem to work the best
* When you switch your T3 off at the rear before plugging in the USB stick, make sure that the T3 has been off for at least 30 seconds before switching on and upgrading.

Change List
There is a full list of changes at the bottom of this post but some important changes you should be aware of as they have changed some key behaviour.
Skip Button Change: We have now incorporated the UP/Down arrows on your T3 remote to be set as Skip buttons by default, these arrows used to display the Channel list, the FAV button will now enter the channel list. (You can revert these changes to the Old settings at any time by going into the Menu>>Setup>>System>>Button Settings and switching enable Skip on Up/Down to Off). We have also disabled the Number Skip buttons by default. (You can revert these changes to the Old settings at any time by going into the Menu>>Setup>>System>>Button Settings and switching enable Skip for number buttons to On). All skip settings can be fully customised to your liking in the Button Settings Menu J

Well, I didn't expect that.
I upgraded this afternoon, I saw the 17/04 date on the download and assumed it was released for some time.
Then I get the email @16:00 advising of its availability.

Anywell upgrade went smoothly and relatively fast.

Just REMEMBER to backup your settings... ;(

Between every public release are a series of beta versions to test the changes and improve the firmware. Once we get to a stable version that works well, Beyonwiz releases it but keeps the date as the version is identical to the last beta release with the same date.

Just a quickie about the new skip functionality - can the arrow buttons be configured for skip backs? I wanted to set Up and Right to skip forward 180 and 30 respectively and Down and Left to skip back 30 and 5 but I couldn't work out how to implement it.

Thats how they are configured by default.

Go into your button settings and check to change the skip values for each.
Skipping back when pressing left and down are implied...there is no way to make them skip forward.
You can also check to ensure that up/down are configured to skip instead of for displaying the Channel List.

You can't change the skip direction for the arrow keys at the moment. That topic was pretty much done to death here and here.

There's an enhancement request in the issue tracker that covers that: #386 Enhancement of up/down/left/right skip configuration.

As for the direction of the skip, I'd have thought that was covered in the description item for each of the arrow button skip settings:
Skip time for LEFT: Number of seconds to skip backward when the left arrow button is pressed.
Skip time for RIGHT: Number of seconds to skip forward when the right arrow button is pressed.
Skip time for UP: Number of seconds to skip forward when the up arrow button is pressed."
Skip time for DOWN: Number of seconds to skip back when the down arrow button is pressed.

Embarrassingly, I'm not really in the habit of reading the descriptions for the T3 menu items because up till now they haven't been a great deal of help. On looking through the 4.4 20150417 menus, however, there has been a lot of improvement in this respect and I will have to get into the habit of looking at them.

I have an ongoing background project to improve the help screens and setting descriptions. Some of that was new in the latest upgrade if you were running the previous official release.

Yeah, I was a strong advocate for returning the down / up keys for skip functionality but quickly turned them off when I couldn't figure out how to set up backward skips????

Got my upgrade done last night - all good. Thanks to all those that did the Beta testing. I'm still exploring the changes, but I do like the return to the skip via arrows - same as the old DP-P2. I appreciate the updated (& corrected) messages, Help screen texts, skins and graphics. The EPG load time is (slightly) faster and I like the front panel percentage complete indication when its booting up. All in all - a great release. Thanks again.

The first EPG load after GUI or system restart probably won't be much faster than before. Subsequent ones should be, because most of the images used in the screen will have been loaded by the previous EPG load.

Trouble with Latest Firmware Upgrade

Post by aidianshide » Thu Apr 30, 2015 01:20

Since I upgraded to the 4.4 firmware version yesterday I've had some interesting experiences.

1) Several times pressing a key on the remote (e.g. EPG, Media) has triggered the spinner and made the T3 unresponsive to the remote until the machine was re-booted.

2) For some reason when I attempt to open WebIF I am now required to enter a username and password. I have no username or password set up for this machine, and have never had to do this before. What is worse is that doing this on my iPad the login dialog box will not clear, whether I click OK or Cancel, and is persistent to the point that I cannot use the iPad browser until I shut down the T3, which makes it possible to close the troublesome tab in the browser.

3) The last few times I have rebooted, the initial logo has been accompanied by a more or less ear-piercing tone or tone-pattern - curiously, a different one each time.

I think for the moment all I can do is revert to the last upgrade for the time being....

Well, I'm now on 4.3, but I'm still having trouble with the WebIF login issue. I've tried changing the WebIF configuration "Allow HTTP authentification" setting, but either way seems to make no difference.

What am I missing?

There might be a bad setting that you are restoring casuing these issues.
Try reflashing to 4.4, and choose not to restore your settings and see how you go.

However, if you are getting screeching when you are not even fully booted up, it might mean your T3 hardware is not very healthy.
Or perhaps the bootloader didn't take properly? Wouldn't have thought that was possible though.

Update both my T3's without problem.
Congratulations on new release it is much better.
YouTube crash is now fixed.
I like the new time-shift progress bar (Pressing OK key).
USB Tuner appears to be better with strong signals with no observable pixelation but still pixelates with lower power signals (channel 31) (<70% on strength meter).
UP/Down arrow functionality is GREAT! Its nice to have the DP functionality back!
EPG load time is now 2-3 seconds rather than 4 seconds for the old software.
Previously I often pressed EPG a second time as there was no response for about 3 seconds and then it took another second to fill in EPG data. Now there is a response after 1-2 seconds.
A further improvement would be to display framework immediately the EPG button is pressed and then progressively fill in the data. This way there is immediate visual feedback that button has been recognized.

In summary this is a worthwhile update.

Hi guys.

I may be missing something, but where has EPGREFRESH gone since the OS upgrade?
It used to be under PLUGINS, and also under EPG>Menu, IIRC, but I can't find it there.
I also can't find it in the SETUP menus.

What am I missing?

I'll have search the list again, I guess.
Thanks for the tip. I'll be back if I can't find it in the plugin list...

Did you have any luck resolving the T3 freezing with that damn spinner on the screen aidianshide? Mine does it quite a lot mainly when I try and go into the timer screen. It's only started since I upgraded the firmware and the only way to fix it is to turn the power switch off on the back of the unit.

It has frozen 3 times in the last hour. Getting worse. I think I may have to reinstall the old firmware. It even did it again when it tried to reboot. The units screen was at 100% of the reboot when it froze. Anyone else having this problem?

I updated my firmware yesterday - wasn't in a rush because the previous one was a waste of effort, but I didn't want to fall too far behind and I saw some mention of skipping being improved - and as this was one of my major bitches ...

All went well and I was delighted that the skipping now appears faultless :o
so congrats and thanks.
One thing, I populated the channels in the EPG, but when I returned to the EPG one channel (7) was empty then later another (9) was empty and later returning to EPG defaulted to "Recently Scanned" view instead of Terrestrial channels (?), but has been OK since then.

I like the new look bottom status bar and the EPG seems much more responsive too, very pleased with this upgrade (if only I could edit ...). :)

You are not trying hard enough. The current firmware has all the tools you need to edit a recording. You can set in and out points non destructively. If you prefer, you can then make the edits permanent and free up the disk space that was used by the parts you did not want to keep.

Wonderful!
actually I did not try at all  as I was informed some time ago this would not happen ...
Where abouts would I find the How-to on this :)

  • Press MEDIA
  • Select the recording you want to edit
  • Press MENU buton
  • On the second page, you will find "Cut-list editor", which will allow you to make non-destructive edits.
  • There is also "Execute cuts", which can make those edits permanent.

This also recovers the edited-out space, but because it creates a new copy, it can be a lot slower than on the DPs. During that process it will need enough space to store the new copy as well as the edited one.

Any tips besides deleting favourites and re-adding services in preferred order?
Any updates on this?

Also, I am constantly getting the new spinning wheel intermittently popping up on screen. It's usually only a couple seconds max, but it's far far more often than on Nov '14 FW.
I tried disabling, but then I would get like a blue rectangle in the same location but it wouldn't disappear without opening any menu onscreen. Not much fun :(

Also, I've noticed a lag of 4-5 secs when setting timers via EPG. When you press Green key (why not double press of Rec key like DP series?), it would lag quite a bit before the shoe would go red to show it has a recording set. Then if I press Green again to edit the timer it also lags.
I am using IceTV EPG.
Also it wasn't leggy when I first installed this FW, but as I have added more and more timers it's become to have longer pauses between pressing green key and recordings being shown in EPG.

For these few issues, there's been far far more pluses and Thi FW upgrade is very welcome

There's your problem. If the IceTV server is slow to respond the T3 will appear slow when it comes to updating the timer state.

There is not much that can be done about that. The new IceTV protocol pretty much requires these updates to be synchronous (otherwise you would easily get into a state where information starts being corrupted) and if their server side infrastructure can not cope with the load then the user experience will deteriorate.

I can't get my T3 to upload the latest software. I have the latest boot loader and I've tried the usb I've used for all the other upgrades AND another older usb. I've also waited way longer than 30sec after I've shut it down before trying to do anything.

The front panel just says 'booting' and then goes straight to 'ABC'.

I feel I'm missing something simple but I have no idea what…

Thanks

Is the USB drive you are using USB 1.1 compatible? Many USB 3.0 devices are not 1.1 compatible, which means they can not be used for the firmware update.

Thanks for the rapid response.

How do I tell if a usb is 1.1 compatible?
Under 'get info' the oldest usb I own says MS-DOS (FAT16) and the one I used for the boot loader says MS-DOS (FAT32)

If the USB drive worked properly for the bootloader update, it should also work for the firmware update, as long is it is big enough to hold all the data.

I suggest that you first check the version of the bootloader on your T3. If it has been correctly updated to the current release, then use the same USB drive, delete all files on it, re-download the firmware and follow the instructions precisely.

It appears USB device is not being recognized during reboot.
Put your new firmware USB device in USB slot and press MENU from normal screen.
You should see USB device listed under SOURCES.
Navigate to USB device and press OK.
You should see a directory there called BEYONWIZ.
If you dont see "BEYONWIZ" then change USB stick to a different USB slot and repeat or change USB stick.
USB stick must be FAT32 formatted (not EX-FAT or NTFS)

That's not a sufficient test to determine USB drive compatibility with the bootloader. It is entirely possible for a USB drive to be USB 2.0 compatible and work with the Linux USB 2.0 driver and at the same time not be USB 1.1 compatible and therefore not work with the bootloader USB 1.1 driver.

Hi
I've followed all suggestions.

Bootloader is uptodate, software's been reloaded, instructions followed precisely.

After the jump straight to the ABC I've followed the menu over to sources and the usb is recognised and there is a beyonwiz folder in it.

I've tried front and back slots for the usb.

Maybe everything will just work better tomorrow..?!

Some keyboards (like my old Apple keyboard) have USB1.1-only USB ports. If you have a keyboard like that, you can test the USB stick for compatibility by plugging the USB stick into a keyboard port.

The fact that he has used this stick to make T3 updates before means that it is USB 1.1 compatible.
My suggestions were to check that stick and USB port is still working.
