I think it would also help if the defaults for search on the forum were "All terms" and "Display Results as: Posts".
The default settings are not really likely to result in a successful search.

i was reading this page http://www.beyonwiz.com.au/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?p=45862 it doesn't say there that options aren't selectable - thought that would be the place to find what's what.
i only tried this because some users reported wizfx wasn't working for them under the lastest firmware update, the 1.05 series and i might need to use this instead but wizfix still works fine for me so i might just stay with what i know - cheers

Hi Tony,
Rather than grin and bear it, I would rather speak up and highlight the problem in the hope that others will recognise it and the forum will move toward becoming more self sustainable. Don't you tire from having to answer the same questions time and time again? Unfortunately if the forum regulars don't respond to questions then those questions run a risk of remaining unanswered. This would rapidly lower the tone of the whole forum. By encouraging members to try self help first before posting we can actually make the entire forum more informative for everyone, particularly the new comers.
Regards,
Ian.
I disagree. I am a member of a number of support forums and find that some are more heavily moderated to keep the forum useful. Have a look at Doom9, ReadyNAS, etc. This forum is slowly becoming a victim of its own openness.tonymy01 wrote:I think you should just grin and bear it, I am a forum junky, and it is no different on any forum. New posters don't read stickies and don't search, and often the search defaults leave a lot to be desired (like these Wiz forums hehe). Even I struggle to find something I know is on the forum sometimes...(e.g silly search restrictions that won't let you search for small words, sometimes what you are looking for is a TLA).

I feel that unless the mechanics of the board are easy to do search (read they need to be seriously simplified with examples or if you wish dumbed down ) it's not easy or self evident to many casual users. Repeats are going to happen frustrating as it is. For me I guess I am lucky that I don't easily get annoyed at anything so I am happy to respond as required. The one thing that does mildly puzzle me is questions like "If I do this ... will it be alright?" My internal thought line is "why don't you do the bloody thing and find out for yourself!" Politeness wouldn't allow me to actually say that sought of thing except to my best friends...

Come on Ian, if it bothers you so much responding to FAQs from newbies then perhaps you should let a few go through to the keeper and let other people with less forum fatigue have a go at answering the questions. Personally I'd be a bit put off if my innocent newbie questions were answered with "This has been asked before - use the search". If a question is so frequently asked that everyone is bored with giving the answer and it really goes unanswered for a couple of days then maybe we do have a problem.IanSav wrote:Unfortunately if the forum regulars don't respond to questions then those questions run a risk of remaining unanswered.
Don't get me wrong Ian, I appreciate the answers you give to completely new questions like explaining the story behind the yellow triangle.
I agree with the others that the forum search function isn't the most useful. Personally I find it easier to use google to search the forum.
Hi,
It appears that chaos is deemed to be the best way to go.
I prefer to be able to help myself rather than having to ask questions. I am sure that there are many who would also like to be more self sufficient. Unless we find ways to improve the information content and delivery then we are deemed to continue going back over old territory.
As for leaving questions unanswered, how would you feel if your questions remained unanswered? I have left some questions, for a while, but when I note that no-one else has taken up the challenge I will come back and respond. I think that providing no response to a question is more harsh than telling the poster that the question has been answered already. At least this answer tells the person that if they read/search the forum there is an answer to be found. Typically this sort of answer goes with questions that are often asked such that the answer shouldn't be that hard to find.
Yes, I am a little fatigued in giving out the same answers time and time and time again. I was hoping that my posts might inspire some logical thought and discussion into ways we can improve the forum experience for everyone. If, after more than three years, we find ourselves having to answer the same questions again and again then I believe that the forum is not working properly and things could be done better.
Regards,
Ian.

I posted a suggestion here a while back.
I agree with Tony (my01) & Peter (prl) about search defaults & restrictions. I?ve often failed to find something when I was searching for a TLA or some other item that only has a total of two or three numerals or characters. I must try glow?s suggestion of using Google next time - one shouldn?t have to resort to that though.
I can understand how Ian feels. I find it hard to post short answers - I know if I do, the person asking for help may not be getting all the information he/she requires, so it becomes a time consuming exercise - I guess it is the trainer part coming out in me. I always believe if the person asking the question understands ?why?, it usually makes things clearer. I also prefer to help myself if I can find the information, but I also have a technical background ? many people asking for answers don?t.
When I see posts asking for help with obviously nowhere near enough information supplied, I think ?here we go again?. But this is what the forum is about - to help each other, explain things, suggest things & report what doesn?t work. I guess if we didn?t like helping others we wouldn?t answer. I find it a fine balance between the time I can spend on the forum & other much more important things.

Hi Dennis,
Similarly we are not able to insert forum notices where forum etiquette etc can be provided.
Regards,
Ian.
I am on record as also asking for the search defaults to be changed. Unfortunately none of us are moderators or administrators of this forum with permissions to set the defaults.sub3R wrote:I agree with Tony (my01) & Peter (prl) about search defaults & restrictions. Fingers crossed Ian, the requests don?t fall on deaf ears. I did know about the restrictions mentioned. I just posted my suggestion for discussion - it may not be a well received suggestion.

I'm way, way late to the WizZilla party, having come across a reference to it in another post and Googled it out of curiosity, only to realise I'd tried it way back when, in one of its earliest incarnation!
I have to say, BRILLIANT job guys. Really impressive. The list of recordings with episode names and clickable descriptions is not only light years ahead of WizFX (and makes figuring out what's what when copying so much easier) but it's also light years ahead of the recordings list on the Wiz itself. If only the Wiz could offer so much detail in the recording title field.
So just wanted to say thanks

must be something in my set up that prevents me being able to transfer files via WizZilla - and re the info description surely a wiz could present this, i mean after all the info is there on the wiz it just has to have the code to present it all. It would also be nice if the wiz presented all this info from the free epgNeon Kitten wrote:I'm way, way late to the WizZilla party, having come across a reference to it in another post and Googled it out of curiosity, only to realise I'd tried it way back when, in one of its earliest incarnation!

I don?t know what f/w you are running but if it is 01.05.334 then WizZilla won?t work (& neither will WizFX correctly even though it appears to). The problem is with the f/w - not with WizZilla or WizFx.dddp wrote:?.

What firmware are you running? If it's 01.05.334, then you're right, WizZilla won't work with that. But that's not because of WizZilla, it's because of problems in the WizPnP server in 01.05.334. It affects all WizPnP clients, both file transfer clients like WizZilla, WizFX, WizMac and getWizPnP, and the Beyonwiz WizPnP streaming clients.dddp wrote:must be something in my set up that prevents me being able to transfer files via WizZilla - and re the info description surely a wiz could present this, i mean after all the info is there on the wiz it just has to have the code to present it all. The problem is more obvious in WizZilla and getWizPnP, because they give an error when there's a WizPnP transfer error. WizFX apparently works; but it gives you an incomplete recording and no warning of the problem.
As for the information that's available in WizZilla (and getWizPnP, which supplies the information to WizZilla), it's all available in the recording header files, and all that information is available to the Beyonwiz and is potentially available to be displayed in the GUI. Not all the information that's displayed for a recording in WizZilla is in the EPG, though. Almost all of the information that's available in WizZilla that is in the EPG is also available to view in the Beyonwiz EPG UI.
To be fair, WizPnP file transfer clients operate on far more capable and powerful computers than the Beyonwiz's 200MHz ARM processor with 64MB of program memory and 8MB flash for configuration and firmware.

all is revealed - yes it's 01.05.334 alrighty - as usual everyone's on the money except me
looks like it's time to revert to .320 (i keep previous versions in case the source disappears) - what a PITA after having to reload all the timers etc. I've been lucky in the past i haven't come across issues like this. I know others have complained bitterly about FW releases that fix some but break other things (1 step forward, 2 steps back) - it just hadn't been my experience
when this issue gets sorted it would be nice if Beyonwiz also posts an appropriately titled thread or announcement of some decription to inform all users and not leave everything to the uber users. You guys should really be on the payroll to reward you for your efforts

Normally it would be in the forum Bug List for the release, but madmax hasn't made one yet.dddp wrote:...

The bug was fixed in the next beta after 01.05.334. That's why the problem isn't in 01.07.055; it's several betas after 01.05.334. Beats me why Beyonwiz didn't release corresponding versions. There's no problem with WizPnP in the current beta, so it should be fixed in the next public release.

If you give DPG a call, explain that you are having trouble with copying files off using WizFX/WizZilla and ask nicely, they might give you a later beta like 01.05.346 which doesn't have the problem. You won't have to rescan nor reset timers. Plus you'll have new feature when you look at your timer list.dddp wrote:looks like it's time to revert to .320 (i keep previous versions in case the source disappears) - what a PITA after having to reload all the timers etc.
I think we're all scratching our heads wondering why 334 is still on the the Beyonwiz website with such a bad problem with streaming. It's particularly puzzling given that 346 was available at the time 334 was released and DPG have sent 346 to many people who have experienced the problem.
thanks for the tip - .334 is ~7mb or so assuming .336 is about the same it could be emailed then? Sure makes you wonder why it isn't on the websiteglow wrote:If you give DPG a call, explain that you are having trouble with copying files off using WizFX/WizZilla and ask nicely, they might give you a later beta like 01.05.346 which doesn't have the problem. sometimes i really wonder if it's worth it all - you think, oh this looks nice think i'll try that ... hours and hours later you find you've actually gone backwards
seeing as most of my posts here in this thread could be considered off topic for the thread title, and seem to created a bit of drama, i think i'll be considering other options next time

I totally agree. A later version could at the very least be put on the web site seeing that 01.05.334 doesn?t let the DP-S1 operate as advertised (page 39 of the DP-S1 manual which is also on the website & covers WizPNP & WizFX).glow wrote:?.

One shouldn?t have to phone DGP, be placed in a queue, & then may be told to revert to 01.05.320 which has the multiple FTA EPG bug.
This is very poor advertising for Beyonwiz & poor customer relations.

Copying off the recording HDD on the DP-H1 has been reported as broken in various ways since 01.05.261 (Aug 2008). The bug that prevents copying from recording USB HDD to another USB HDD has been in the "Known Problems" section of the Beyonwiz release notes since 01.05.280 (Dec 2008). But the Product Details page says (and always has said) "Back-up contents of DP-H1 to USB Drive, networked PC or NAS drive."sub3R wrote:I totally agree. A couple of months of failure to fix a bug that blocks advertised capability is nothing, unfortunately
Unfixed bugs in timer allocation on the H1 go back even further (01.05.192, Dec 2007).

That is beyond a joke Peter. If I owned a DP-H1 I would be fairly unhappy. Also why would anyone want to buy a DP-H1 with these known problems - one certainly couldn?t recommend one.
In fact I have got to the stage that I won?t recommend any Beyonwiz product simply because of the last two firmware releases. Back when I had the reliable (for our S1s) 01.05.247 f/w I did, but not since .320 came out.

Hi Dennis,
I wish I/we knew the reasoning behind the last two firmware releases. Knowing why may make it easier to understand what is going on.
01.05.346/01.05.348 and 01.07.065/01.07/068 are much better in many regards but they are still not perfect. Some users may have issues with these later betas. I suspect this may be the reason why these versions are not being widely shipped. If they do end up shipping I assume that there may be a warning attached.
The beta testers are waiting on news and progress from Beyonwiz engineering. We hope that the last main niggle in the current beta will be resolved and a fresh public release can be made. We have no information or timing at the moment so please don't ask. Keep an eye on the OpenWiz firmware page for more firmware release information.
Regards,
Ian.

Hi Ian.
I understand what you are saying, & thanks for the information supplied. As a previous Topfield HD PVR beta tester I know how the expected next beta can turn out to have other issues that weren?t in the previous beta, therefore the expected release date keeps getting blown out. Too many times have I seen the 2 steps forward 1 step back scenario. It would be a very brave man to say the next beta to come will be a good one.
My suggestion was, due to this possibility happening, & the now known problems with 01.05.334 that cause problems for a few users requiring a change of f/w, it could be replaced with one of the later more reliable betas with the appropriate warning about what bugs exist.
Regards,
PS. I just realised this discussion is really in the wrong topic, apologies to the TwoWizards.

The WizPnP server in 01.05.334 is known not to work correctly. This causes getWizPnP to exit early when it gets an incomplete file, which gives the error that WizZilla displays. WizFX will "finish" the copy, but it will be incomplete.
This is most likely the cause of at least the second error you report.
The problem with the 334 WizPnP server is well covered in the forum:
Firrmware upgrade causes problem networking DP-P1 with DP-P2 (Cause posted in the topic here).
01.05.334 on www .beyonwiz .com .au - not the latest? (Problem with WizPnP server in 334 mentioned here).
Downloaded files now skip after firmware upgrade DP2 (the post is about the problem on a DP-P2, but it's general to 334 on all models).

You can only get a copy of 01.05.346 from Beyonwiz Support.
Unfortunately, the downloads page on the Beyonwiz corporate site has been broken for a few days.
I've posted about the downloads problem in the beta section.
I think it's a good idea to hold onto copies of a couple of earlier firmware releases for just this reason.

as other's have already said - it's a sad state of affairs when the people responsible for providing owners with support won't publicly provide firmware that fixes a problem that a firmware that they publicly provide creates
my time on hold of a few minutes short of an hour to get the 346 version is ridiculous when it could be provided on their web support page.
Also the fact that no precautionary warnings in the release notes that 344 will break network file transfer is also abysmal

Re: Windows XP home & Beyonwiz DP-S1
As distributed, no. The .wrp file contains the systemId of the model it's intended to run on. If that id doesn't match the one in the machine, the firmware won't load at all.Mammoth wrote:Will DP-P2 firmware updates work on a DP-S1

It is possible to hack a .wrp file so it can load on a machine that it's not intended for, but as to whether it will work, your guess is as good as mine It probably won't give you access to the DVD player.
The only hack I know about that people have tried is to run DP-P1 firmware on an FV-L1. However, comments from Beyonwiz on the beta forum suggested that that could cause serious problems (some digital output ports on the FV-L1 are assigned differently on the DP-P1). The posts weren't detailed enough to work out what kinds of things might happen.
At startup, the main application, wizdvp, takes an option (-dps1, -dpp1, etc) to indicate what machine it's running on, but that is hackable if you know what you're doing. I don't know to what extent that will make the firmware behave properly if you started with the wrong firmware package.
I'd recommend calling Beyonwiz support to get a copy of 346 or 320, and let them know why it's not possible for you to get 320 from the usual place.

Called support told them about the Korean website not working and that the last
update they offered stoped transfers between DP-S1 and computer.
They sent me a link for DPS1_01.05.349 beta and all is working again on the XP system.
I still get the same error when I try and use Windows 7 x64 not sure why.

I get the ....
?WizZilla Error!
Invalid argument to function: at line 6899
Event: TIMER1CTDOWN ? Dialog:0
OK?
.... error message every now & again (always line 6899).
Sometimes I can queue 3 recordings for download & WizZilla will copy 2 recordings successfully & then display the error message after it completes copying the 2nd recording. It doesn?t copy the 3rd recording, after accepting ?OK? it just shuts down. After running WizZilla again, the 3rd recording could be copied successfully.
Sometimes with 2 recordings queued for download, it displays the error message after the 1st recording copies successfully. It doesn?t copy the 2nd recording, after accepting ?OK? it just shuts down. After running WizZilla again, the 2nd recording could be copied successfully.
At other times, after queuing 2 recordings for download, it copies the 2 recordings successfully & doesn?t bring up the error message. In other words it works correctly.
The last time WizZilla displayed the error message I had 2 recordings queued for download. It copied the 1st recording successfully, but before starting to copy the 2nd recording it displayed the above error message. After accepting ?OK?, WizZilla shut down & continued to copy the 2nd recording successfully in the background ? this could be observed in Windows Explorer. I have experienced this issue twice.
wizzilla.log details for the above last issue (logging level 2):(IP address) in the above log = the static IP address of the DP-S1 being copied from.
Additional information:
DP-S1 running 01.05.320 f/w connected via Ethernet LAN to a router which is connected to an XP home SP3 Desktop PC via Ethernet. WizZilla ver: 1.1.0.60 copying in Wiz native format to a USB Ext HDD connected to the PC.
All recordings had been edited successfully on the S1 & checked to make certain they play back reliably from the Internal HDD before copying. WizPNP Server enabled & Client disabled. The S1 isn?t recording at the time - the fileplayer being displayed.
I don?t have a screen saver or any power saving functions enabled on the PC.
The external HDD is a Western Digital WD5001AALS in a Welland Sun Bright Classic 3.5? ME-740J (USB 2.0) external case. This Ext HDD works reliably as does the LAN.
Does anyone know what the ?Invalid argument to function: at line 6899? means & have any idea why I?m getting the above timeouts?
Edit 2-Jan-11: The above issues are intermittent. Yesterday, in a few sessions, I successfully copied up to 4 queued recordings before eventually getting the above error message.
Edit 16-Jan-11: So far WizFX ver.1.0.1.4 & ver.1.0.2.3 always copies all selected multiple recordings (using <Ctrl left click> on each recording to select a group of recordings for copying).
Some more observations on this issue here.

WizZilla 1.1.0.60 doesn?t always copy the complete recording.
In addition to the issues in my previous post I also noticed that WizZilla 1.1.0.60 doesn?t always copy the complete recording (using DP-S1 01.05.320 f/w).
So far I have only noticed this on the one edited recording called ?Wycliffe-5? which was part of a series recording containing the two shows ?Wycliffe? & ?The Professionals? recorded from 7two on Prime.
My standard editing procedure for this type of recording is to edit the complete recording (keep A-B), this removes everything prior to the start & everything after the end. I then re-name the recording. The next step, usually some time later, is to copy ?The Professionals? to a new file (copy A-B to a new file), the copied recording being manually re-named as part of the copy procedure. I then edit ?Wycliffe? from the series recording (keep A-B) & re-name this recording (in this example ? ?Wycliffe-5?). I play back a few seconds from the start of each recording before copying to the Desktop PC?s Ext HDD in the wiz?s native format. This works perfectly using WizFX 1.0.1.4 but not so with WizZilla 1.1.0.60.
Copy Results: (All copied recordings start with the 0022 ? 32,768kB file. Only files from 0169 have beeen listed).
1. Copying only ?Wycliffe-5? with WizZilla 1.1.0.60:
0169 ? 32,768kB
0170 ? 24,208kB (the last file)
The end was 1min 50sec short compared to playing the edited recording ?Wycliffe-5? on the DP-S1 from the Int HDD. WizZilla didn?t display any error message.
2. Copying only ?Wycliffe-5? with WizFX 1.0.1.4:
0169 ? 32,768kB
0170 ? 32,768kB
0171 ? 32,768kB
0172 ? 32,768kB
0238 ? 32,768kb (the last file)
This was repeatable every time using WizFX. The end (0172) was 14sec longer compared to playing the edited recording ?Wycliffe-5? on the DP-S1 from the Int HDD (this isn?t an issue - at least all the show has been copied). 0238 has been left over from one of the early edits & doesn?t play back on the DP-S1 (not an issue).
3. Copying only ?Wycliffe-5? with WizZilla 1.1.0.60:
0169 ? 32,768kB
0170 ? 32,768kB
0171 ? 32,768kB
0172 ? 24,240kB
0238 ? 32,768kb (the last file)
This time the end was correct compared to playing the edited recording ?Wycliffe-5? on the DP-S1 from the Int HDD. 0238 has been left over from one of the early edits & doesn?t play back on the DP-S1 (not an issue).
4. Copying only ?Wycliffe-5? with WizZilla 1.1.0.60:
0169 ? 32,768kB
0170 ? 32,048kB (the last file)
The end was 1min 35sec short compared to playing the edited recording ?Wycliffe-5? on the DP-S1 from the Int HDD. WizZilla didn?t display any error message.
The ending of the show was missing from (1) & (4).
I hope this information will help.

This is possibly a bug in getWizPnP, rather than in the WizZilla GUI shell.
Could you try downloading the executable of the latest Windows executable for getWizPnP and see if that fixes the problem? Unfortunately, you can't use that version of getWizPnP with the current WizZilla.
There can sometimes be a discrepancy between the length of the recording in the main header, and the length in the trunc file. If the new version doesn't fix the problem, try running:
getWizPnP.pl --list --verbose --debug=trunc Wycliffe-5
and post the first part, including the first few lines of the trunc file output, and the last part, from a bit before where the problems start.
That should give me something to work on in trying to find out what's going on.
I also don't understand what you did differently in 1, 3 and 4 to get different results.

The compiled getWizPnP.exe 0.4.3a worked fine Peter.

In the next couple of days I will copy across ?Wycliffe-5? a few more times to make sure this is repeatable.
I tried to use the same command that WizZilla uses but I had trouble with --BWName & using the recording date & time, so I used:
c:\>getwizpnp -a -H (the S1?s IP address) -p 49152 ?Wycliffe-5? -O ?M:\PVR_copy-test? -d --resume
Between results 1 & 3 the S1 had been switched to standby & back ON again.
Prior to result 4 the PC had been shut down for the night (the S1 had been left ON). Result 4 was copied the next day (today).
Result 2 had been copied with WizFX before result 3, after 3, & before 4 (today).
Earlier today I came across another edited recording (keep A-B edit only being used) that had copied 1min 18sec short at the end using WizZilla 1.1.0.60. This was a 10.3GB recording of ?New Year Day Concert 2011?.
Thanks for your help.

Edit 3-Jan-11: Clarified the edit type.
Added 7-Jan-11:
A bit more information for ?Wycliffe-5? using getWizPnP.exe 0.3.4.0.
E:\>getwizpnp -a -H (the S1?s fixed IP address) --list -vvvv "Wycliffe-5"
gave me:
File 0172 ? Size 24821760 = 24,240kB
(Ignore the size differences in 0022 & 0238 compared to the downloaded copy ? this is the wiz error glow picked up).
I have deleted 0026 through to 0167 in this list.
The above was obtained after I had to reindex the S1?s Int HDD due to an SBS recording re-naming issue.

The exact same procedure was used in each case except I copied to a different sub directory each time - the same Ext HDD was always copied to. Only one recording was queued for download each time. The end result with this recording just seems to be inconsistent using WizZilla but always consistent using WizFX.prl wrote:?
