There are few file types that need their extension changed for the bw to play them. Ideally the BW should just play these files. or at least attempt to.

Hi Dave,

I got the feeling that when Stephen revisits the media detection code he was going to try and improve on the speed and accuracy of media type detection. Perhaps you will get your wish then.Dave? wrote:It'd be better if the BW recognised MOD files as mpeg files and just played them.

Renaming resulted in the bw opening the file, however only a black screen is shown with no audio. Mine's a GRD73, not an Everio, and it produces .AVI files, not .MOD files.j s wrote:If you're talking about he JVC Everio range they are MOD files which are just mpeg2 files with some additional camera type data added. I'd like to be able to plug my Everio into the BW via USB and just play the recordings off the hard drive.

Mplayer can play the files direct off the camera, so it should be possible.
You need to transfer files through wizFX as .tvwiz format and not .ts to be able to play them back over the network on the Beyonwiz.wook wrote:I put an avi, a jpeg and a beyonwiz ts file into the shared folder and the beyonwiz played the avi and jpeg no probs but saw its own recorded file an unsupported format. strange.

MPEG Streamclip comes up with an error about file format (I've seen a couple of different ones) when I open a BW recording file. But if I click "Open anyway" it works just fine.Gully wrote:There has been some discussion that there is an error in the TS header that WizFX creates and if that can be fixed it should play.
If I save it from MPEG Streamclip using Convert to TS, MPEG Streamclip will open it without error.

I have converted digital camera clips into one bigger home video (one file / year). I have used MediaCoder for conversion (and then combining them (stream copy)).
I have converted my video clips to H.264, which is inside AVI container. These files does not play ("not supported") in BW.
Shouldn't H264 be playable, no matter what the container is (e.g. AVI or MP4)?
Then I tried to convert these files to Xvid in AVI container. These files played, but without sound.
Audio is converted into video file (AVI) as MP3 using LAME MP3 encoder. Shouldn't this kind of MP3 inside AVI be playable?
Of course same results when I combine small clips into one big video file.
VLC media player plays these files nicely with audio.
I have tried with summer 2007 FW and also with 01.04.162 FW. I do not have newer FW, because there seems to be everlasting problems with Finnish model FWs.
I tried to play these files through WLAN and USB drive.

For the files that play without audio, try switching the BW to 5.1

Hi Janilxx,
Regards,
Ian.
I have had problems playing back .WAV audio media with relatively low bit rates. I have a bug report in with Beyonwiz on this issue (it was in the beta forum and reported against 01.05.190). Try increasing the audio bit rate to at least 44KHz.janilxx wrote:I tried to use another sampling rate (was 8000 Hz, changed to 22kHz). No luck.
I tried to change to CBR mode (from VBR mode). No luck.
However, some DVDs I have converted using AutoGK, play nicely with audio. Their audio type is same as in my home videos.
Regards,
Ian.
Sample rates other than 48kHz or 44.1kHz have been known to cause all sorts of issue in consumer equipment. I have encountered some receivers that can not even handle 32kHz, which is used by DAT and miniDV as the "lo-fi" format. As far as I know, the Beyonwiz chipset does not have a hardware engine to perform high quality on the fly resampling, so any uncommon sample rate could lead to problems.
I have read about problems of sample rates, thats why I tried 22kHz. Unfortunately I did not try 44.1 or 48kHz.peteru wrote:Sample rates other than 48kHz or 44.1kHz have been known to cause all sorts of issue in consumer equipment.
Now I tried them with 44.1 and 48kHz and they played nicely! Thanks!
Now I have to find a way to be able to playback them (among other video files) with two BWs. I do not believe BW will add possibility to copy files to its HDD so I have to hope WLAN works well enough. When that has been confirmed, I can buy e.g. WL-500g Premium to share my videos
BTW... the BW does not play DVR-MS (the files MCE generates for DVB-T recordings), might seem normal but I'm an MCE refugee and have some shows on a HDD I would've watched had the BW been able to play them. No biggie though, just noticed it was missing from main list.

Though supposedly it's video is encoded as MPEG-2 and audio is encoded as MPEG-1 Layer II.
The following is shamelessly copied and pasted from < http://danielking.typepad.com/daniel_ki ... _flag.html >
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DVR.ms to MPEG 2 - What I can do:
MCE utilizes the Stream Buffer Engine (SBE) that was first introduced with Service Pack-1. SBE turns your PC into a DVR device allowing PVR options such as pause, playback, and recording.
When a show is recorded on an MCE PC the file is saved as a glorified MPEG 2 called DVR.ms. In order to burn and watch a DVR.ms file on a DVD Player, or any other device that does not support this type of file, it must be converted into a supportable file type.
* This is done easily with Service Pack 2, by simply right clicking on the recorded show and selecting create dvd/cd , you can burn your selection as a DVD-readable DVR.ms file. I usually do not go this route because the DVR.ms is larger than a pure MPEG-2 file and there is very little difference in quality. Plus, I do not have program that will edit DVR.ms files without converting them to MPEG-2.
For the initial editing and conversion of a DVR.ms file, I use a Sony Program called DVGate. Without this type of program, a DVR.ms file can still be converted to a more usable file type, but it would consist of two streams - a video (MPEG-2) and an audio (MPEG-1 Layer-2). Because of timestamp issues causing recorded streams to have sometimes have synchronization problems, DVGate is my preferred choice for initial editing and converting.
If more editing is required, I?ll use Adobe Studio once the file is converted to MPEG-2. After editing I can choose to burn my Adobe project as an MPEG 2 file directly onto DVD. If menus are needed, I?ll export my project as an MPEG-2 file and use another Sony product, called DVDit, to finalize and burn.
The elementary audio and video that streams into an MCE PC are encrypted. When recording, it is the job of the SBE to write these encrypted streams to a directory on your PC. They are saved as DVR.ms files. Streams that come with CGMS-A (Content Generation Management System for Analog) attached are flagged as protected DVR.ms files and can only be viewed by the PC it was written on, or any other networked device running MCE. Even if I use Audio-video cables and attached them to the VCR, the CGMS-A stays in the analog video preventing me from converting the analog video to MPEG-2.
Companies, such as HBO, use CGMS-A to prevent pirating of digital quality movies.
Digital encoding laws give me the right to own a single copy of any given program. Why should a coorperation be allowed to tell me how I can save my copy? It looks like what?s going on here is that companies, such as Time Warner, owners of HBO, have found yet another way to make money. That?s what it?s all about anyways, right?
This is not about piracy as much as it is about Time-Warner and other media conglomerates selling the next wave of media devices, such as portable players and DVRs. With the success of the iPOD, portable media is the wave of the future. With nano-technology it won?t be long before an iPOD size movie viewer is created that can store hundreds of movies. These companies aren?t protecting from piracy, they are positioning themselves for this up-and-coming technology. By preventing the spread of digital media, we not only pay for it now but if we want it in the future on our saavy micro-media players, we?ll have to pay for it again. In the meantime, we'll just have to buy Time-Warners most expensive DVR that has more memory to store all those protected DVR files.
Let?s figure out how to convert these flagged DVR.ms files so we can own our one lawful copy in the format that we choose.
- Daniel King
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* Once you've used XP SP2 to create a directory of files ready to burn to DVD you should then be able to simply copy the main VOB file to somewhere accessable by the beyonwiz.
I forgot about SP2's built-in ability to create DVDs from other video files. I suspect the supported file types is limted, and I'm uncertain whether it creates beyonwiz compatable VOB files or not, but it could be an easy way to convert files. But there are many good, free, video file convertors available anyway.
cheers

I tried copying a Topfield recording to an external hard drive and changed the extension .ts .tp and .mpg but non of them worked. How do I get the toppy recordings running on the BW?
It would be nice if native .rec support was added.

As Tony has said maybe it's time to hang on a bit - however if you really want to do something now you should *convert* the rec file to TS by running it through MPEGStreamclip (which reads Toppy files) and use the menu option 'Convert to TS' . SImply changing the suffix doesn't change the format in a way that the BW will recognise. I've converted all my remaining Toppy files and it works for me.Paranoid666au wrote:I tried copying a Topfield recording to an external hard drive and changed the extension .ts .tp and .mpg but non of them worked. OK thanks for that guys. In Daver's post it says to rename the .rec file and that's what I did.
I was thinking of converting with MPEG Streamclip but I'm pretty reluctant to try things when they just end up not working. Call it beating head against wall syndrome or is that phobia?

Some new results with .235 with P1 over LAN. (last test .192) .MOV files (motion jpg) now start to load but fail (previously "unsupported format"). DV files (type 1) load but black screen, no sound, no progress bar but keep "playing" until stop is pressed. AVI files from Canon digital still camera - "usupported format" (no change). HD files (excepting those generated from digital FTA) play jumping and no sound (no change). As said before all files take longer to load.

Hi Dave,
I've experienced an unusual file format issue that may be relevant to this thread. With the following settings and video combination, the file will play, but with no sound.
BW Settings
- HDMI video, 1080i
- Passthrough audio
- Optical output (though coax reveals the same issue) to amp
File format
Nokia N95 recorded, 640*48 MPEG-4 vid, mono AAC, 48,000kHz, 3.03 mbits/s, FR 29.46, 'mp4' file.
Sound can be heard via the TV's HDMI connection, and can be heard via the amp if 'passthrough' is changed to '5.1'. A similar circumstance occurs with some MKV files.

This is a well documented shortcoming of the Beyonwiz . The implementation of passthrough is very "simplistic".
In this case "mono AAC" is being passed through to your playback device, which does not know how to decode it.
The wish list has (or should have) an entry for selecting passthrough / decode / downmix options for individual audio codecs.

Thanks for responding to this as I know I'm starting to get beyond my level of understanding here.
I thought so too, but I've searched through the bug/wish list with for 'passthrough', 'decode', 'downmix', 'codec' and even 'audio' yet I've found nothing that paraphrases;The wish list has (or should have) an entry for selecting passthrough / decode / downmix options for individual audio codecs.
Some audio codecs (MP4 and MKV for example) will play video, but in order to successfully play audio for which the playback device does not know how to decode it, the BW must be switched from passthrough to 2 channel or 5.1. Introducing the ability for the BW to downmix such codecs would allow a broader compatibility of audio when passthough is selected.
Please point me in the right direction if I'm mistaken.

This addresses part of your wish though not in terms of different codecs/formats.11. Sound improvements, as follows:
(a) in 'Set-Up' --> 'Configuration' --> 'A/V Output', replace the three current audio sub-menus "Audio Format", "S/PDIF Output" and "AC3 Compression Mode" with three new sub-menus "Analogue Audio Output", "S/PDIF Audio Output" and "HDMI Audio Output". Each of these will have selectable settings of "Disabled", "2ch", "5.1ch" and "Passthrough" (except no 'Passthrough' option for analogue). See suggestions here for more details.
(e) add a menu item in 'Set-Up' --> 'Miscellaneous' --> 'Preference' as follows: "Passthrough PCM remote volume", with two options "Enable" or "Disable".

I read this as more related to menu setup, and as you've indicated it doesn't specifically address the issue of changing the audio settings in order to hear a particular codec. I've asked this before and Ian has offered an acknowledgement of it's existance, but on closer scrutiny it does not appear to be well articulated in the wish/bug list... To me anyway.

As I stated in this http://www.beyonwiz.com.au/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=1782 posting. I wonder if anyone with an AV receiver that can decode AAC has tried this!
My work-around this issue is to turn up the TV's sound when I play video whose codec's fail to downmix to my amp, as the BW decodes via the HDMI. I wonder if the improving passthrough is being looked at...? It's these 'one percenters' that overly complicate the BW experience.MeWhoElse wrote:Yeah, I have an amp that plays AAC, it lights up the display as recongnising the AAC bitstream, but no sound... of course till you make the Beyonwiz decode it...NPR wrote:Hi Dave,
I've experienced an unusual file format issue that may be relevant to this thread. With the following settings and video combination, the file will play, but with no sound.
BW Settings
- HDMI video, 1080i
- Passthrough audio
- Optical output (though coax reveals the same issue) to amp

mov files
I thought I read that mov files are supported in the latest firmware. Previously they had crashed my Wiz.
I downloaded "HD" tutorial files from www.luminous-landscape.com (described as 960x540 H264 for Quicktime 7.2 or later). They play OK on my computer.
I was pleased to see that the quality of the images is very good on the Wiz but there is no sound - very frustrating. I'm using 2ch on HDMI and changing the audio settings doesn't seem to help.
Any suggestions to resolve this or is it an incompatibility issue?
Thanks
Lex
PS: Dave - if possible, it would be helpful to update the supported format list for the new firmware.

Re: mov files
Hi All,
Downloaded new FW yesterday and tried out FLAC Audio support. Doesn't seem to work yet. First post in this thread was last updated in March this year, and FLAC is listed as NOT being supported - at least then.
Do any of the Beta testers know if this file type will be supported in a future FW?
Otherwise very happy with this FW release. It now even supports my tortuous 1080p Pioneer Demo Video which runs at 20Mb/sec. One of my other H264 720p test files now also runs without stuttering. Well done!!

OK, thanks for the heads up on this one Gully. I believe no license is required for its use, so I guess we could and should add it to our Wish List. Being a completely lossless but compressed format that saves on about 50% storage compared to the original WAV format, I think it very worthwhile. It's how I store my ripped files on my NAS. That way it's a carbon copy of my CDs and I can create any other file format from it including the original CD (WAV) format. The nice thing too about FLAC is that it stores Metadata whereas WAV does not.Gully wrote:I haven't seen any indication of FLAC being included.
Mind you, I don't recall if anyone has requested it before.
Phil.
