I might try the HDD first, then the play with the cabling second. I can check the pin outs when I pull the HDD out for replacement and make a new cable to suit. in case this is the culprit.

The simple solution, for those in the same situation as I was, is to just set the Denon input HDMI to 'standard' not 'enhanced'.

No recabling required, simple configuration.

Yes, that is what I thought, but you never know.

That means that I should leave the fan setting to ON rather than the default AUTO then.

It seems wrong that the default for the fan means that it is off for the majority of the time that the device is working but not being used.
